Natural Remedies for Dogs (and Cats too)

After adopting my 1st puppy, “Buttons” a Schnauzer mix from the animal shelter, I discovered that she was a dog with allergies.  As a puppy, Buttons would itch and scratch constantly.  After trying lots of medications including steroids and antibiotics (which compromised her immune system), I finally tried natural remedies for dogs and had great success.  This is our journey...

I adopted my first precious furry baby, "Buttons" a Schnauzer mix breed from North Shore Animal League. Even as a puppy Buttons would itch and scratch terribly from seasonal allergies and hot spots. I did the usual, brought oatmeal soap and conditioners and took her to Vet after Vet who gave her steroids, antihistamines, antibiotics, ointments and salves. She seemed to have seasonal allergies and was particularly miserable in the Spring and Summer months with some relief in the Fall and Winter. But as her allergies worsened it seemed that she was suffering year-round.

Even with all the medications she was taking, she was still suffering and at times was literally covered from head to toe in crusty hot spots. I have to admit when it got really bad and I thought I had no other choice, I considered putting her down; I felt she was just suffering too much. I would watch her scratch, lick and bite herself constantly until her skin was red and raw. Buttons seemed like she was in agony and I felt absolutely helpless and guilty. Guilty because I felt I wasn't doing all I could do to help get her relief.

Toxic Chemicals found in Dogs and Cats

In a 2008 story in USA Today by Elizabeth Weise it states that a Washington, D.C.-based Environmental Working Group performed studies on a small sample of 35 dogs and 37 cats by using blood and urine samples and found:
...found levels of brominated flame retardants (used in furniture, fabrics and electronics) in cats 23 times higher than in humans, and mercury levels (likely from fish in pet foods) five times higher. In dogs, levels of perfluorinated chemicals (from stain- and grease-proof coatings) were 2.4 times higher than in people. Overall, 35 chemicals in dogs and 46 in cats were found.
In other words, toxic chemicals in our everyday products like; food, furniture, fabrics and electronics, etc. are poisoning our pets on a daily basis.

What can you do to naturally to alleviate and reverse these (severe) allergy related symptoms in dogs and cats? Is it even possible?

Cat with Allergies
Dogs with allergies and cats with allergies suffer just like humans. Unfortunately this condition has become all too common but it is not natural for our pets to suffer from allergies. Allergies are a sign that your dog's or cat's immune system is overloaded with toxins. Because their body system is overloaded, the body's filtering system is giving you a signal that something is wrong; thus your pet's allergy symptoms.

Dog with allergy
Excessive scratching, itching, biting or chewing at skin or paws, hair loss or redness is the most common symptom of allergies in dogs and allergies in cats which may include skin problems either in one area or on your pet's entire body that spreads or worsens. While there are a variety of other symptoms the root cause of the illness is toxic overload in your pet's system.

Take action now, to help cleanse and build your dog or cat's immune system. Simple steps can be taken to clean out the toxins from your pet's system. While medications and drugs give temporary relief, they also serve to mask and push symptoms further into your pet's system causing more damage and illness later on. That is in addition, to any nasty side effects these medications may have.
